Elizabeth Briel is an artist with an Asian focus. She has recently illustrated her first book, photographed her second, and is writing another about her quest through the backroads and rivers of Thailand, Laos & Vietnam in search of the perfect paper.
Currently she is based in both Sydney and Asia, and will be in North America during Fall 2010. Send her a message if you're interested in her work, or would like her to speak at your bookstore / organization / university.

I roamed the back roads and rivers of Thailand, Laos & Vietnam for four months, looking for handmade paper and the people who make it.
Then completed the 30 illustrations with Vietnamese ink on local handmade paper while studying Chinese in Lijiang.
Now I'm writing the first draft somewhere in western Sydney. We'll release the book in late 2010. I hope to talk about it at a bookstore or university near you. Just message me if interested.

Taught photography to former street children in Siem Reap, Cambodia, as part of a rehabilitation effort with several NGOs including Caritas.
I was the first instructor outside of a workshop context, so designed and implemented the aesthetic and technical goals for students, with the aid of a local teacher/translator. Also edited and organized photos for an eventual book with iMac, and for the Angkor Photo Festival 2006.

Cameras for Cambodia was a grassroots project in Siem Reap, the gateway to World Heritage site Angkor Wat.
We collected secondhand film cameras and photo books from donors around the world to put cameras in the hands of kids aged 7-15. Working with a local NGO, we taught photography and basic photo editing to a group of 6 children.
In 2006 the project was transferred to the Angkor Photo Festival, to provide a longer-term vision with an international organization.

I enrolled for a semester at the IIEF to learn French through total immersion.
This was a self-created study-abroad program, partially funded by independent study with art professors at the University of Minnesota.
I sent instructors paintings, drawings & prints, and received university credit in return.
