Executive summary:
Fifteen years of technology and systems experience, 10 years in management roles, excellent communicator at all levels. I'm entrepreneurial, interested in media and marketing. Fascinated with communities, and the ways that technology is changing our culture. I've been called "visionary" more than once.
The more entertaining long version:
Once upon a time, I wanted to be a game show host in Vancouver. Then I turned 13, got a Commodore 64 and changed my mind: writer. Then I got a Mac and decided to be a font snob. I even went to school for that one. Problem was, I kept doing these conceptual arty projects that required me to do technical stuff, so I learned how to make dynamic websites. That got me into interactive media and QuickTime, so I managed to hijack a startup into being a cutting-edge interactive media hosting company. I'm still not sure how that really happened. Along the way, I worked with a real-life social networking project, MC'd a few networking events, co-wrote a book, maintained my font snobbery, and guerilla-marketed the poop out of whatever cool stuff came along.
Then, during one of Vancouver's grey-overcast marathons, I up and moved to Australia. I got my current job by placing a hard drive in the freezer and telling everyone to be patient. Before I showed up, there was no IT department, now I'm currently dragging our technical infrastructure into the 21st century. Web-enabled CRM, VOIP, VPNs to home offices, you name it. We created a brilliant piece of sales relationship management software called Bergamot, which is now starting a life of its own.
I've learnt that, at least in my case, being able to go with the flow is much more useful and interesting than rigidly adhering to some kind of five year goal plan. I've been rich, I've been poor, I've changed things, I've ignored other things. I've been challenged, I've had it easy. All in all, so far so good.
I think I'd still like to host a game show.
