Development Project Manager at Objective Corporation
Sydney Area, Australia
My professional experience has centered around software engineering. I have primarily worked in technical roles in a hands on capacity. The organizations that I have worked for have generally been doing product development and as such have required skilled engineers and best practice development.
I have performed a number of roles including senior software engineer, consultant, team leader, architect and project manager. My strengths include technical skills, analysis and design, architecture, leadership ability, a systematic approach and a strong understanding of the big picture.
My technical experience is primarily in the Java space but I have also worked with C++. I have considerable experience in the development of enterprise applications on the server side. I also have experience in the telecommunications industry as well as in multimedia and virtual reality.
A large part of my current role focuses on architecture and I find the combination of working on a project from both an architectural and project management perspective to be very satisfying.

February 2007 — Present (2 years 11 months)
Having worked previously at Objective in primarily a hands-on technical capacity, I spent the first year in this new role focusing primarily on the project management aspects. There are four projects to manage delivering the next generation ECM suite for Objective. The role also includes line management responsibility.
The next generation product suite includes several technical innovations including broader enterprise integration via ESB, a grid server architecture for high scalability and availablilty as well as a single sourced customizable user-interface for web and native clients.
Whilst the role primarily centres around implementing a more agile development methodology and providing transparency to the business there is a significant technical aspect as well.
Now that these projects are up and running, I have switched to doing a split role of project management (two projects) and technical work to prototype and analyse the subsequent generation product.

February 2005 — January 2007 (2 years )
There were two main aspects of this role including guiding the transition of the current generation product into a J2EE services oriented architecture as well as starting work on the next generation product.
The current generation product had a team of nine developers for the server team. I was responsible for this team in terms of the technical output of the team, the architecture and design of the server, mentoring and the introduction of new technologies and best practice.
For the second year in this role, I concurrently started work on the next generation ECM software for Objective. This included the introduction of a Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) using Enterprise Service Bus (ESB), a grid computing model for high scalability and a customizable rendered user-interface that was singly sourced for both native and web clients.
Technologies included Java, XML, J2EE, ESB, WebServices, Mule, SOAP, C++, Oracle, SQL Server, Hibernate, JSF, JBoss Seam and JBoss Rules.

August 2003 — January 2005 (1 year 6 months)
This role involved specifying, architecting, designing and developing the Workflow Service for Objective's ECM product.
There was an existing workflow engine written in C++. This project involved considerable enhancements to the functionality provided by the C++ version as well as a complete re-write using J2EE technologies. This was an end to end responsibility and Objective needed someone that could look after the product from conception to delivery as well as introduce new technologies and best practice.
Initially, this role required consultancy and business analyst skills. Once specified, my planning and design skills were required. I was also the primary resource for the development of the server-side components.
