___________
Portfolio available, comprising many AV installations based on commercial grade DSP platforms featuring intuitive user interfaces for simplified operation. These systems are often powerful and inherently complex if not tamed through clean, clutter free GUIs.
Audio principles applied are based on knowledge and techniques refined over many years. While the 'keep it simple' philosophy is often required to achieve the desired result, it is by no means always. Portfolio upon request.
Sound Engineer
ABC Radio
Government Agency; 1001-5000 employees; Broadcast Media industry
1984 – 1992 (8 years)
(formal title : Radio Operator - Production Operations)
All facets of sound production were encountered, with ample opportunity for skill sets to be honed and developed. Mainly based at the national broadcast facilities in Sydney.
Recorded orchestras at the Opera House, mixed bands broadcast live to national networks, worked on radio plays (with awards, including one specifically for production values) and worked in the more traditional areas of radio broadcast. These included panel operating regular segments and various outside broadcasts.
Also panel operated for Sir Jimmy Young, who was the #1 drive time presenter on BBC Radio 2 in the UK at that time, purportedly with more than 15 million regular listeners.
station Tech dude
Radio 5MMM
1981 – 1982 (1 year)
Maintained and upgraded broadcast studios as required. Every week, mixed a band live to air for 'local and live' segment. Increasingly involved in music craft /composition and production. Good refresher to recording techniques. Music production is an ongoing activity.
Senior Station Technician
Radio 8DN
1980 – 1981 (1 year)
Hired to manage the repair and maintainance of equipment at the Darwin studios and the Berrimah transmitter site. Once reliability was restored, personally designed and installed a new edit suite. Also tailored an outside broadcast console with extensive modifications and extensions, which was well received by the talent. Also developed a keen interest in sound production during this period.
Communications Technician
Cliffs Robe River Iron Associates
1977 – 1980 (3 years)
Working in the Pilbara on diverse technologies including marine radar and ultra robust industrial paging. Also worked extensively on railway systems, including train based VHF transceivers plus microwave communications links and remote repeater stations. Provided further grounding in principles of 'mission critical' system design.
Radio Technician (in training)
the Department of Civil Aviation
1973 – 1976 (3 years)
Training and working at Adelaide Airport on various military grade communications and Navigational Aid systems. DCA was considered the premium trainer with first class facilities and educators and was largely responsible for establishing Australia's exemplary airline safety record. Training was to the highest available standard at that time. DCA provided an invaluable grounding for the electronics industry and a unique insiight into robust system design principles.
